Fox News<\/a>\u00a0is reporting on Hanna B\u00f6hman, a Canadian former model and motorcycle sales rep\u00a0found a different calling, joining Kurdish\u00a0women fighting ISIS in Syria.<\/p>\nShe\u00a0 joined the YPJ \u2013 the female brigade of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units \u2013 after sneaking into Syria in\u00a0and receiving rudimentary instruction on the care and feeding of the AK-47 before being thrust onto the front lines.<\/p>\n
“I just felt like I had to do something greater with my life,” B\u00f6hman told Fox News. “I spent my life not doing what I wanted to do, but what I was expected to do. I wanted something different.”<\/p>\n
“It was inspiring to fight alongside other women,” she said.<\/p>\n
She served in two positions with the YPJ, first as overwatch guarding against suicide bombers, and then as\u00a0her unit’s sniper.<\/p>\n
“My first gun — an AK-47 — was 40 years old,” said B\u00f6hman, who recounted a near-death gun battle with two ISIS snipers in the northern Syrian border town of Til Abyad.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m so much taller than most of the Kurdish girls and I was always getting shot at by snipers,” said B\u00f6hman, who is 5 feet 8 inches tall. “On this one day, the bullet was so close I actually felt it part my hair.”<\/p>\n
“We\u2019re being the change we want to see in the world,” she said. “It sounds clich\u00e9, but it\u2019s true.”<\/p>\n
