{"id":72067,"date":"2017-05-14T12:24:21","date_gmt":"2017-05-14T16:24:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=72067"},"modified":"2017-05-14T12:24:21","modified_gmt":"2017-05-14T16:24:21","slug":"semi-gallic-panache","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=72067","title":{"rendered":"Semi-Gallic Panache"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The French are famous for their Gallic <em>panache<\/em>.\u00a0 And while I understand that the present-day French don\u2019t really consider French-Canadians to be \u2013 or to speak \u2013 \u201ctrue French\u201d, there are nonetheless some strong cultural similarities between the two peoples because of common heritage.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, I observed some of those similarities firsthand.\u00a0 While visiting Montreal, I stayed at a small hotel.\u00a0 The hotel had an arrangement with an adjacent caf\u00e9 to serve breakfast to the hotel\u2019s guests as part of the room\u2019s cost.<\/p>\n<p>The breakfast was nothing fancy:\u00a0 a small buffet consisting of boiled eggs, some ham, yoghurt, bagels (Montreal is big on both yoghurt and bagles), some fruit, bread, jam, etc . . . .\u00a0 They had a toaster, and also had both coffee and juice.\u00a0 You served yourself, and left when you were done.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, not a bad breakfast \u2013 especially considering the price. \u00a0(smile)<\/p>\n<p>However, they also had pancake batter and a self-serve griddle for making pancakes.\u00a0 This in turn meant they had maple syrup on the buffet line as well.\u00a0 \u00a0(Yes, it was <u>real<\/u> maple syrup \u2013 this was in Montreal, remember?)<\/p>\n<p>As I recall, I\u2019d gotten my breakfast and was seated.\u00a0 While I was having breakfast I observed a young couple who were also in the caf\u00e9.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t being nosy; the caf\u00e9 was fairly small, so I really didn&#8217;t have much choice except to see and hear what they were doing.<\/p>\n<p>By accent and other indications, the man appeared to be French-Canadian.\u00a0 His girlfriend appeared to be American \u2013 by accent, I\u2019d guess from somewhere in the Midwest\/Great Lakes region.<\/p>\n<p>They went up to the buffet.\u00a0 The lady went to the griddle and made a pancake or two, apparently for herself.\u00a0 In contrast, the man picked up some bread and toasted it.\u00a0 He then put it on his plate and proceeded to put some maple syrup on it.\u00a0 (Not exactly my &#8220;thing&#8221;, but hey: whatever.)<\/p>\n<p>His girlfriend looked at him and said in a mildly exasperated tone, \u201cYou Canadians put maple syrup o\u00adn <u>everything<\/u>, don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The guy\u2019s response was priceless.\u00a0 Without missing a beat \u2013 and with perfect Gallic nonchalance and a distinct French-Canadian accent \u2013 he replied:\u00a0 \u201cIt is . . . the Canadian way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since the guy was apparently French-Canadian, IMO that qualifies as at least semi-Gallic <em>panache<\/em>.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The French are famous for their Gallic panache.\u00a0 And while I understand that the present-day French &hellip; <a title=\"Semi-Gallic Panache\" class=\"hm-read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=72067\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Semi-Gallic Panache<\/span>Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":623,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26,170],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-72067","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blather","category-who-knows"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/72067","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/623"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=72067"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/72067\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=72067"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=72067"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=72067"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
