PR.com: Why did you start out in the Navy? And did you always want to go into show business?<\/p>\n
Charlie Murphy: When I was a teenager, my whole thing was\u2026 I was a street guy. I hung out with street people and when you hang out with a crowd like that you will end up in trouble. So I got in trouble and it was like, \u201cOk, you wanna to go to prison or you wanna go to the military?\u201d<\/p>\n
PR.com: Is that what the judge said?<\/p>\n
Charlie Murphy: That\u2019s what I said. Because it was like, this is not gonna stop. When you get out [of jail], if you don\u2019t go away right away, you\u2019ll be coming back there. I got out on a Monday and I signed up for the Navy the same day. It was the best move I could have possibly made because everybody else that I know that I grew up with, two guys survived and everybody else is dead. And out of the two guys that survived, one of them just got out of prison, like, two weeks ago. He went to jail when he was nineteen. There\u2019s only one dude that didn\u2019t go to jail. He\u2019s a barber and he\u2019s still in Roosevelt (Long Island). But, everyone else is dead. So, I did the right thing by leaving. Those guys went on to do hard prison sentences, and get killed and horrific stuff, man. I became a man in the Navy. That\u2019s where I got my first apartment, my first marriage, my first bank account, my first car\u2026 it all happened there. That was a good experience.<\/p>\n

Charlie Murphy: And when I went into the military is when I realized I had a very good brain. It\u2019s very easy to learn, very adaptable and very creative. And I started believing in it.
