He would bankrupt the nation,&#8221; Paul told ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl on &#8220;This Week.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>\u201cActually we&#8217;re very lucky John McCain is not in charge because I think we would be in perpetual war,\u201d the Kentucky senator added. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>McCain has lately taken to criticizing President Trump&#8217;s attacks on the media;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The first thing that dictators do is shut down the press,&#8221; McCain said in an interview with NBC News. &#8220;And I&#8217;m not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I&#8217;m just saying we need to learn the lessons of history.&#8221; <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I disagree with Paul, in that eight years of a presidency isn&#8217;t &#8220;perpetual war&#8221; &#8211; the war in Iraq and Syria is still going on through the Obama Presidency. But that &#8220;maverick&#8221; McCain has outlived any usefulness he ever had to the Republican Party. What has Trump done to &#8220;shut down the press&#8221;?
