In fact the VA was complicit with him in his endeavor, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcpo.com\/news\/local-news\/hamilton-county\/cincinnati\/man-stole-over-100000-from-cincinnati-va-by-falsely-claiming-to-be-a-veteran-affidavit-claims\">WCPO<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Shawn Oliger, 43, filed an application for disability compensation with the VA in April 2015, the report said. He claimed he had been a Marine from 1990-93 &#8212; a period of time during which, a later investigation found, he had been in prison in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>When the VA could not verify his service, it mailed several documents requesting verification. Although Oliger never completed any of these and his claim was closed, his unverified service was still recorded in VA databases.<\/p>\n<p>When Oliger filed a second claim in November 2015, the Cincinnati VA granted it based on the previously recorded data. Oliger subsequently received a VA identification card, $124,335 in health care benefits &#8212; including multiple hospitalizations &#8212; and $5,786 in housing assistance.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fox19.com\/story\/34231366\/us-attorney-man-pretended-to-be-marine-to-defraud-va\">Fox19Now<\/a>, they interview an Iwo Jima veteran and he explains the problem exactly as I would;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Noah] Switzer told us he was a Hospital Corpsman 1st Class during the Battle of Iwo Jima. All of his sons also served in the military and are veterans. He explained that there are vets in need that could have used the aid.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They need money and can&#8217;t get it.
