Critchley. Despite the fact that a military review board declared Critchley\u2019s remains non-recoverable in February, 1949, the folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/historyflight.com\/nw\/\">History Flight<\/a> recovered his earthly remains according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/News-Stories\/Recent-News-Stories\/Article\/1043296\/marine-missing-from-world-war-ii-accounted-for-critchley\/\">DPAA<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In November 1943, Critchley was assigned to Company F, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, which landed against stiff Japanese resistance on the small island of Betio in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands, in an attempt to secure the island. Over several days of intense fighting at Tarawa, approximately 1,000 Marines and Sailors were killed and more than 2,000 were wounded, but the Japanese were virtually annihilated. Critchley died on the first day of the battle, Nov. 20, 1943.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interment services are pending for Marine Corporal Walter G.
