The family legend goes that she died of a broken heart when he was captured by Chinese soldiers in November 1950 and died of starvation three months later. She claimed that he came to her in a dream at the moment he died. Two years before, she had given permission for him to join the Army at the age of 17. From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bradenton.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article114413628.html\">Bradenton Herald<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI never thought this would happen,\u201d said one of his nieces, Janet Stubbs.<\/p>\n<p>The Army honor guard folded the American flag that had draped his casket.<\/p>\n<p>At the graveside, a soldier knelt and handed the folded flag to Stubbs. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?attachment_id=69353\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-69353\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/111216funeral_th1-500x327.jpg\" alt=\"111216funeral_th1\" width=\"500\" height=\"327\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-69353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/111216funeral_th1-500x327.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/111216funeral_th1-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/111216funeral_th1-768x502.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/111216funeral_th1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>She told afterward what she knew about the family.<\/p>\n<p>Bertha Minard, her grandmother and Wayne Minard\u2019s mother, had lost her farmer husband, Wayne\u2019s father, in 1947, a year or so before Wayne Minard volunteered for the Army. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were poor and struggling,\u201d she said. \u201cMy grandmother tried to take care of nine kids.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=67916\">September<\/a>, Hondo told you that he was coming home. From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellinghamherald.com\/news\/nation-world\/national\/article112712983.html\">Bellingham Herald<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Department of Defense issued a statement this week about his fate:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn late November 1950, Minard was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, fighting units of the Chinese People\u2019s Volunteer Forces (CPVF) &#8230; in North Korea, in a delaying action south to Kunu-ri,\u201d the Army wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnemy forces launched a large-scale attack with heavy artillery and mortar fire on Nov. 25, when the regiment was located in defense positions near the Chongchon River. By the following day, enemy fighting had isolated the unit and they were ordered to withdraw. Minard was reported missing in action as of Nov. 26, 1950.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinard&#8217;s name did not appear on any POW list provided by the CPVF or the North Korean People\u2019s Army,\u201d the Army statement said. \u201cHowever two repatriated American prisoners of war reported that Minard died at Hofong Camp, part of Pukchin-Tarigol Camp Cluster, on Feb. 16, 1951.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on this information, a military review board amended Minard\u2019s status to deceased in 1951.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn April and May of 2005, a Joint Recovery Team conducted the 37th Joint Field Activity in Unsan County, South Pyongan Province, North Korea.
