The Navy Times<\/a> reports that Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, Wednesday at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C, defended his decision to change the job titles of Navy personnel claiming that the existing titles didn’t allow for folks to get jobs easily after the service. He said this about the title for “corpsmen”, the medical folks who followed Marines into combat;<\/p>\n

One of the most cherished job titles going away is \u201ccorpsman,\u201d but Mabus said change was necessary.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a historic title,\u201d he said. \u201cIt only came in after World War II. One of the problems people have been having transitioning out of the Navy is that while the Navy and Marines know what \u2018corpsman\u2019 means, not many other people do.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why the title is being changed to something more akin to ‘medic’ or medical technician,\u201d Mabus said. Training those sailors to emergency medical technician or nursing standards will also help their job prospects in the civilian world. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, I guess World War II isn’t historic enough. When Marine special forces units re-adopted the “Raider” title<\/a> for their designation, World War II was historic enough.<\/p>\n

A little closer to the truth;<\/p>\n

Mabus said that dropping the job titles is meant to \u201cquit segregating women,\u201d who have been historically required to wear different uniforms than their male peers. Mabus has systematically set out to change that. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n
