{"id":68365,"date":"2016-10-10T09:56:50","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T13:56:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=68365"},"modified":"2016-10-10T10:07:45","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T14:07:45","slug":"raymond-haerry-passes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=68365","title":{"rendered":"Raymond Haerry passes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?attachment_id=68366\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-68366\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Raymond-Haerry.jpg\" alt=\"Raymond Haerry\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-68366\" \/><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Raymond Haerry, who was one of the few survivors of the USS Arizona left with us, passed on September 27th, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/checkpoint\/wp\/2016\/10\/09\/one-of-the-last-survivors-of-the-pearl-harbor-attack-on-the-uss-arizona-dies-at-94\/?hpid=hp_rhp-more-top-stories_no-name%3Ahomepage%2Fstory\">Washington Post<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After the first explosions rocked the USS Arizona, Raymond Haerry sprinted to one of the ship\u2019s antiaircraft guns, hoping to somehow repel the aerial bombardment.<\/p>\n<p>But the weapon wouldn\u2019t fire. The gun\u2019s ammunition was in storage.<\/p>\n<p>Haerry raced toward the ammunition depot. An explosion reached it first, igniting gunpowder and fuel, according to a U.S. Navy interview featuring Haerry and his son. The explosion cracked the ship in two and lifted the bow into the air.<\/p>\n<p>Haerry went with it, falling into oily Pearl Harbor waters that had been lit on fire. He somehow made it to shore, sweeping his arms in front of him as he swam to push the flames away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He spent the next few days pulling his shipmates from the water. According to the Post, only five Arizona survivors remain.
