We already knew that DHS has some real problems managing immigration.\u00a0 Just look at some of the issues found with in connection with the foreign-born spouse involved in the San Bernardino shooting (here<\/a><\/em> and here<\/a><\/em> and here<\/a><\/em> and here<\/a><\/em>), along with issues relating to Syrian “refugee” immigration (here<\/a><\/em> and here<\/a><\/em> and here<\/a><\/em> and here<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n

But you\u2019d think they could get at least the \u201ccommon stuff\u201d right. Like run-of-the-mill, everyday immigration.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, you\u2019d be wrong.\u00a0 From a recent news report (emphasis added):<\/p>\n

The U.S. government has mistakenly granted citizenship to at least 858<\/strong> immigrants from countries of concern to national security or with high rates of immigration fraud who had pending deportation orders<\/em>, according to an internal Homeland Security audit released Monday.<\/p>\n

The Homeland Security Department’s inspector general found that the immigrants used different names or birth dates to apply for citizenship<\/em> with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and such discrepancies weren’t caught because their fingerprints were missing from government databases.<\/p>\n

DHS said in an emailed statement that an initial review of these cases suggest that some of the individuals may have ultimately qualified for citizenship, and that the lack of digital fingerprint records does not necessarily mean they committed fraud.<\/p>\n

The report does not identify any of the immigrants by name, but Inspector General John Roth’s auditors said they were all from “special interest countries”<\/em> \u2014 those that present a national security concern for the United States \u2014 or neighboring countries with high rates of immigration fraud. The report did not identify those countries.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yeah, no need to worry.\u00a0 The DHS IG says that even though the individuals used an alias or other false data during application, that that \u201cdoes not necessarily mean they committed fraud\u201d.<\/p>\n

Really, Mr. IG?\u00a0 Can I come visit the planet on which you’re living?<\/p>\n

So, ICE is going after these folks \u2013 right?\u00a0 They\u2019re being tracked down and prosecuted for fraud, then stripped of their ill-gotten US citizenship – right?<\/p>\n

Hardly.\u00a0 Two have been. \u00a0Prosecutors declined to prosecute another 26.\u00a0 32 remain under investigation by ICE; they\u2019ve closed 90 investigations.\u00a0 The status of the remaining, oh, 700+?\u00a0 Damned if I know.<\/p>\n

Oh, and this might be just the tip of the iceberg with respect to the problem.\u00a0 The DHS report that found the above issue indicates that digital fingerprints are missing from Federal databases for 315,000<\/span> immigrants having final deportation orders on file.\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing some of those either have or will \u201cslip through the cracks\u201d soon.<\/p>\n

Yahoo News has an article on the subject<\/a><\/em>; it\u2019s worth a read.\u00a0 Don\u2019t read it if you\u2019re already angry or having a crappy day.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, I\u2019m guessing if you read it and weren\u2019t already having a crappy day . . . you\u2019ll be having one afterwards.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s gotten a lot of grief on various issues, including immigration.\u00a0 And I can’t say I necessarily like all of his positions or public statements.<\/p>\n

But his recent calls for increased scrutiny of those asking to immigrate to the US certainly seem to me to be on the mark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
