Fae V. Moore<\/strong>, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, USMC, was lost on 20 November 1943 on Tarawa Atoll. He was accounted for on 9 August 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Pfc. Ronald W. Vosmer<\/strong>, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, USMC, was lost on 20 November 1943 on Tarawa Atoll. He was accounted for on 12 April 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Pvt. Emmett L. Kines<\/strong>, Company F, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, USMC, was lost on 20 November 1943 on Tarawa Atoll. He was accounted for on 8 May 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Pvt. Frank F. Penna<\/strong>, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, USMC, was lost on 20 November 1943 on Tarawa Atoll. He was accounted for on 19 June 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Pfc.\u00a0Wilbur C. Mattern <\/strong>, Company M, 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, USMC, was lost on 21 November 1943 on Tarawa Atoll. He was accounted for on 9 August 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Welcome back, elder brothers-in-arms. Our apologies that your return took so long.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re home now. Rest in peace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>. . .<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over 73,000 US personnel remain unaccounted for from World War II; over 7,800 US personnel remain unaccounted for from the Korean War; and over 1,600 remain unaccounted for in Southeast Asia (SEA). Comparison of DNA from recovered remains against DNA from some (but not all) blood relatives can assist in making a positive ID for unidentified remains that have already been recovered, or which may be recovered in the future.<\/p>\n<p>On their web site&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/Contact\/ContactUs.aspx\"><em>Contact Us<\/em><\/a>&#8221; page, DPAA now has FAQs. The answer to one of those FAQs describes who can and cannot submit DNA samples useful in identifying recovered remains. The chart giving the answer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dpaa.mil\/portals\/85\/Images\/DNA.jpg\"><em>can be viewed here<\/em><\/a>. The text associated with the chart is short and can be viewed in DPAA&#8217;s FAQs.<\/p>\n<p>If your family lost someone in one of these conflicts and you qualify to submit a DNA sample, please arrange to submit one. By doing that you just might help identify the remains of a US service member who\u2019s been repatriated but not yet been identified \u2013 as well as a relative of yours, however distant.\u00a0 Or you may help to identify remains to be recovered in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Everybody deserves a proper burial. That\u2019s especially true for those who gave their all while serving this nation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Note<\/span>:\u00a0 Three of the individuals listed above who were lost on Tarawa were accounted for some weeks ago.\u00a0 It is not known why there was no announcement of those three individuals\u2019 formal accounting on DPAA\u2019s \u201cRecently Accounted For\u201d page until this week.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DPAA has identified and accounted for the following formerly-missing US military personnel.
