The New York Times<\/a> reports that the Senate voted this week to register women born after the year 2000 for the draft after January 1, 2018;<\/p>\n

The shift, while fiercely opposed by some conservative lawmakers and interest groups, had surprisingly broad support among Republican leaders and women in both parties.<\/p>\n

The United States has not used the draft since 1973 during the Vietnam War. But the impact of such a shift, reflecting the evolving role of women in the armed services, would likely be profound.<\/p>\n

Under the Senate bill passed on Tuesday, women turning 18 on or after Jan. 1, 2018, would be forced to register for Selective Service, as men must do now. Failure to register could result in the loss of various forms of federal aid, including Pell grants, a penalty that men already face. Because the policy would not apply to women who turned 18 before 2018, it would not affect current aid arrangements.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I’m against the draft, even though it probably does have a purpose in a national emergency, but, you know, if it’s good for the goose, it’s good for the gander.<\/p>\n

Jimmy Carter reinstituted the draft registration in 1979 to respond to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, just seven years after Richard Nixon presided over the last draft lottery. The hippies filed a law suit that they thought would end the selective service by demanding that women should be drafted, too, souring Americans on the whole idea (remember this was in the days of the Equal Rights Amendment).<\/p>\n

In 1981, the Supreme Court in Rostker v. Goldberg decided that since women were excluded from combat, there was no compelling reason for Congress to draft them. Well, that restriction has been lifted now that the social justice warriors have prevailed in the halls of the Pentagon. <\/p>\n

If the social justice warriors want equality, the good stuff comes with the bad stuff. It’s all political theater anyway – no one has been drafted since December 1972.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
