The other day we wrote<\/a> about J Thomas Burch, the VA deputy director in the VA\u2019s Office of General Counsel who also runs the No-Star Charity, the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation that takes in millions of dollars in donations and then spends a couple thousand helping veterans – all while he drives a Rolls Royce to his VA job. He likes to wear a Green Beret to highlight the fact that he was a special forces officer in Vietnam, like in the picture above, which got us to thinking about how much of special forces officer he really is – so we got his records. <\/p>\n

Well, it turns out that he did serve in Vietnam with the 5th Special Forces Group from June 1967 – December 1968. he was a Staff Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer – a lawyer – during his assignment there. He went to jump school in October 1967 in Vietnam, but other than that, he has no special forces training;<\/p>\n

He’s a member of the Special Forces Association, but they admit that they made a mistake – he should have been an associate member, not a general member.<\/p>\n

Burch should really be fired from his charity. He’s a crappy CEO – according to the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation’s 2013 IRS form 990 filing, they took in $7 million in donations, they spent $568,000 helping veterans, they spent $95,000 on salaries for officers and $6 million on professional telemarketers. That’s really piss-poor management.<\/p>\n
