{"id":64757,"date":"2016-03-11T07:25:30","date_gmt":"2016-03-11T12:25:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=64757"},"modified":"2016-03-11T08:47:20","modified_gmt":"2016-03-11T13:47:20","slug":"getting-paid-for-academic-idiocy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=64757","title":{"rendered":"Getting Paid for Academic Idiocy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the University of Oregon, recently a professor conducted a study related to \u201cclimate change\u201d.\u00a0 In and of itself, that&#8217;s nothing newsworthy.<\/p>\n<p>But this one is a bit different.\u00a0 As part of the project, the \u201cresearch professor\u201d in charge published a paper titled, \u201cGlaciers, gender, and science.\u201d\u00a0 It urged other scientists \u201cto take a \u2018feminist political ecology and feminist postcolonial approach\u2019 when researching glaciers and climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the paper\u2019s abstract; I\u2019ve added emphasis to highlight some of the spectacular idiocy. (The full version of the paper <em><a href=\"http:\/\/phg.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2016\/01\/08\/0309132515623368.long#abstract-1\">can be viewed here<\/a><\/em>; a PDF-format copy <a href=\"http:\/\/phg.sagepub.com\/content\/early\/2016\/01\/08\/0309132515623368.full.pdf\"><em>may be downloaded here<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Glaciers are key icons of climate change and global environmental change.\u00a0 However, the <em>relationships among gender, science, and glaciers<\/em> \u2013 particularly related to epistemological questions about the production of glaciological knowledge \u2013 remain understudied.\u00a0 This paper thus proposes a <em>feminist glaciology framework<\/em> with four key components: 1) knowledge producers; (2) <em>gendered science and knowledge; (3) systems of scientific domination; and (4) alternative representations of glaciers<\/em>.
