{"id":63732,"date":"2016-01-10T07:30:35","date_gmt":"2016-01-10T12:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=63732"},"modified":"2016-01-10T09:50:04","modified_gmt":"2016-01-10T14:50:04","slug":"for-all-our-old-fart-army-readers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=63732","title":{"rendered":"For All Our &#8220;Old Fart&#8221; Army Readers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Remember Chickenman?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i66.tinypic.com\/27x2eki.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ever wished you could hear a few of those old episodes again?\u00a0 Well, if so . . . you might want to <a href=\"http:\/\/otrrlibrary.org\/OTRRLib\/Library%20Files\/C%20Series\/Chicken%20Man\/\"><em>check out this link<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 (Another archive that has a few other Chickenman odds and ends &#8211; promos, opening, closings, etc . . . &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/oldradioprograms.us\/Chicken%20Man.htm\"><em>can be found here<\/em><\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>No, he&#8217;s not everywhere any more.\u00a0 And those collections might not contain all of the Chickenman episodes ever made.\u00a0 But IMO it&#8217;s certainly nothing to sneeze at.<\/p>\n<p>Unless you&#8217;re allergic to feathers, of course.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n<p>For our younger readers: <a href=\"http:\/\/the60sofficialsite.com\/Chickenman.html\"><em>Chickenman<\/em><\/a> began as a mid-1960s radio parody superhero series modeled on the then-popular <em>Batman<\/em> TV series.\u00a0 It was created by Dick Orkin for Jim Runyon&#8217;s morning radio show on Chicago&#8217;s WCFL.\u00a0 Orkin voiced the male character parts, except the narrator who did each episode&#8217;s intro and wrap-up; Chicago actress Jane Roberts voiced the female roles.\u00a0 Runyon provided the voice of the narrator.<\/p>\n<p>Each episode was about 2 1\/2 minutes long.\u00a0 It gained fame in military circles when it was featured on AFN (Armed Forces Network) broadcasts during and for a while after Vietnam.\u00a0 As I recall it was rather popular &#8211; especially overseas.<\/p>\n<p>It was campy and dumb; some of the episodes didn&#8217;t work that well.\u00a0 But at times it was freaking hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>It also had one of the most, um, &#8220;memorable&#8221; introductions at the beginning of each episode <a href=\"https:\/\/oldradioprograms.us\/My%20Old%20Radio%20Shows\/C\/Chicken%20Man\/chickenman_open.mp3\"><em>you&#8217;ll ever hear<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 And according to a guy I once served with, at least once Chickenman&#8217;s vocal part from that intro was voiced &#8211; quite loudly &#8211;\u00a0 in one of the hallways at USAREUR HQ not long after an apparent visit from the &#8220;good idea fairly&#8221; during a rather high-level briefing.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, I&#8217;m old enough to remember hearing Chickenman on the radio too.\u00a0 Some of the episodes were broadcast on one of the local radio stations for a while where I grew up.<\/p>\n<p>Good times. And if that makes me an &#8220;old fart&#8221; too &#8211; well, considering the alternative I guess I can live with that.\u00a0 (smile)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember Chickenman?
