According to the Winfield, Kansas Daily Courier<\/a>, Bruce Allan Pendlay, a fellow we busted about a year ago<\/a>, was finally sentenced. Pendlay had claimed that he was a career Special Forces soldier and he had insinuated himself into the local veteran community with a forged DD214 discharge certificate. His actual service lasted a mere four months.<\/p>\n

When he was busted, he faked an attack by someone in a dark vehicle who Pendlay claimed had tried to murder him. Actually, he had shot himself in the chest and thrown the weapon from his truck while he called 9-1-1 to report the crime. Initially, he was arrested for being a felon in possession of a handgun, but those charges were dropped when the prosecutor couldn’t prove that he was indeed a felon who had been arrested for armed robbery. So Pendlay was sentenced to repaying the local police departments for their investigations into his faked shooting and he was further sentenced to write a letter of apology to the VFW to which he belonged;<\/p>\n

Court costs totaled $158, the Cowley County Sheriff\u2019s office costs totaled $1093.27 and the Winfield Police Department\u2019s costs totaled $712.86.<\/p>\n

[Cowley County Attorney Chris Smith] confirmed that Pendlay has paid these costs in full.<\/p>\n

In addition, he was ordered to send a letter of apology to the Veterans of Foreign Wars for possibly misrepresenting his military service.<\/p>\n

Smith said that he had received a copy of a letter, but Arkansas City Post 1254 Commander Charlie Cravens and Quartermaster \u201cBuff\u201d Buffington could not confirm receipt of a letter from Pendlay on Wednesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
