Someone sent us this article about Kathryn “Kat” Gates Skipper a Woman Marine (WM) who has been claiming around the internet that “she was the First Woman Marine (WM) to stay overnight in the field for combat training, and the first to stay aboard a Ship overnight. She was heavily involved in Operations Desert Shield\/Desert Storm and was the First WM in Combat Operations”. So we decided to check into her background. First, here is one of the articles where she made the claims<\/a>;<\/p>\n

The claims also show up in Florida local media<\/a> and in at least one CNN<\/a> article.<\/p>\n

She also brings in Charles Skipper’s, her husband, service to her bio, we have his records, too, but according to the NPRC, he is indeed a Vietnam War veteran of the 1st Cavalry Division with one Purple Heart and a Combat Infantryman Badge. Sometimes she says that he has a bronze Star, but not according to his records – he does have two bronze service stars on his Vietnam Service Medal, though which may have caused some confusion, as it often does.<\/p>\n

But, back to “Kat”; she was a clerk, she served 18 years in the active force and the Reserves combined. Four years active duty from 1975-1979. There was no combat for her to participate in during that period. Her records don’t indicate that she was on active duty for Desert Storm like she claims.<\/p>\n

I also don’t see see where she’s been assigned to a ship, like she claims;<\/p>\n

I don’t see any schools or training that would make her an asset in combat;<\/p>\n

Another article<\/a> calls her a “decorated veteran”. I guess that’s purely subjective, but I don’t think that a Good Conduct medal (known in veterans circles as “the Good Cookie”) makes her all that decorated, nor do I see her Marine Corps Distinguished Service Award, whatever that is, that the article refers to either.<\/p>\n

UPDATE 7\/14\/2016: She’ll be a speaker at the Republican National Convention<\/a>, still rocking the BS;<\/p>\n
