Others are broader in their appeal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Then there are some songs that are tied to a particular time of life. This is one of the latter. \u00a0Enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C11MzbEcHlw?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The male singer was, well . . . to be charitable, he was homely.\u00a0\u00a0But the man could indeed sing.\u00a0\u00a0(The ladies involved &#8211; there were two &#8211; were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anything but<\/span> homely.) And Jim Steinman could certainly write catchy rock-n-roll.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, it\u2019s rather cliche; it&#8217;s overdone, and it&#8217;s dated. But then again: don\u2019t everyone\u2019s teen years always seem that way in retrospect? (smile) And IMO this one captures some aspects\u00a0of that time of life better than most.<\/p>\n<p>A few bits of trivia about <em>Paradise by the Dashboard Light<\/em>, courtesy of Wikipedia:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. Yes, that\u2019s indeed MLB Hall of Famer and longtime Yankees announcer Phil Rizzuto doing the \u201cplay-by-play\u201d. Whether he knew the context in which his vocals were to be used has been disputed. Rizzuto later claimed he did not know the intended context when he recorded the vocal. \u00a0However, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meat_Loaf\">Meat Loaf<\/a><\/em> (the male vocalist, who was present at that recording session) later stated that\u00a0Rizzuto was fully aware of the intended context but later feigned ignorance to deflect criticism. \u00a0Decide for yourself who you want to believe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. The lady singing in the audio here is <u>not<\/u> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karla_DeVito\">Karla DeVito<\/a><\/em>, who appeared on the song\u2019s music video (above) and toured with Meat Loaf; it\u2019s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ellen_Foley\">Ellen Foley<\/a><\/em>. DeVito lip-synched Foley\u2019s vocal for the video; she sang it\u00a0on tour. \u00a0Both ladies are accomplished singers (as well as quite attractive).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You may recognize Foley from her work on television a few years after this tune was recorded \u2013 she played the character <em><a href=\"http:\/\/home.lyse.net\/mott\/ef\/images2\/tvguide_180585_1.jpg\">Billie Young<\/a><\/em>\u00a0during the second season of the TV series \u201cNight Court\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3. Todd Rundgren played guitar on the tune; Edgar Winter played saxophone. The song&#8217;s author Jim Steinman played keyboards and is also credited with \u201clascivious effects\u201d on the recording. (smile)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4. Meat Loaf had previously appeared in the now-cult-classic film &#8220;The Rocky Horror Picture Show&#8221;. \u00a0Due to that fact, a recording of a live performance of the song was made on 35mm film and distributed to theaters showing\u00a0&#8220;Rocky Horror&#8221;\u00a0for use as a short subject before midnight screenings (the film was beginning its journey to\u00a0midnight feature cult classic at the time).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some tunes are tied to a particular person, time, or place.
