Oldtimers here will remember when we busted this Paul Tillson<\/a> fellow nearly four years ago. Our friends at Guardian of Valor<\/a> tell us that stealing valor wasn’t the extent of his crimes. The Shore News Network<\/a> reports that the Veterans’ Affairs Department’s Office of Inspector General, Criminal Investigation Division indicted him for stealing $150,164 in disability benefits for injuries he claimed were related to his combat service;<\/p>\n Through an investigation by the Department of Veterans Affairs, it was determined that Tillson did not serve in a combat function or engage in combat during his tour of duty overseas, which commenced after cease-fire terms had been accepted by Iraq. Tillson also acknowledged that he falsified information related to his alleged combat stressors.<\/p>\n The charge of embezzlement of funds from the United States carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense. Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 16, 2015.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n You can see from the picture above, Paul Tillson thought very highly of his service – quite a bit different from what the NJ Guard thought of him;<\/p>\n Here’s what I wrote about his records back then;<\/p>\n Well, he\u2019s a Staff Sergeant, not a Sergeant First Class. He has nine months total of active duty, and three months were Basic Training and Advance Individual Training. He was infantry in the New Jersey National Guard until May \u201991 when he became a supply sergeant, but oddly enough his 2-1 says he was a squad leader supply sergeant.<\/p>\n Then in August he was activated and sent to Camp Doha, Kuwait with a Heavy Maintenance and Supply unit as the company clerk. That\u2019s how he got the CIB that he thinks he earned \u2013 cuz being the company clerk in a mess kit repair company after Desert Storm ended is just like being infantry in Desert Storm.<\/p>\n Someone who knew him at the time told us that he faked an injury and was returned early from Kuwait. He came back in January \u201992. That same person told us he started faking the Gulf War Syndrome after his return, I wish they\u2019d change the name of GWS to National Guard Syndrome, because those are the only guys who seem to get it. If there are any DVA OIG guys out there, you might want to look into that.<\/p>\n Then he went back to his infantry duties in the NJNG until he left the service in 1993. So he spent ten years total in the Guard, and nine months of Federal service.
