The folks at Military Phonies<\/a> send us their work on Greg Earl Witter<\/a> who claims that he retired from the Army as a Master Sergeant in 2010, that he was with Task Force Ranger in Somalia, that he has combat tours of Iraq and Afghanistan, that he was a Special Forces soldier, and that he was the lone survivor of his final mission and spent a year at Walter Reed recovering from his injuries which abruptly ended his career;<\/p>\n

Journalists<\/a> like his stories, and who wouldn’t;<\/p>\n

The truth is close, but not as close as ol’ Greg would like you to think. He left the Army as a staff sergeant after 11 years, he served with a special forces unit as a “voice interceptor” in the Alabama National Guard in the mid-90s. When he reenlisted, he went to the 82d Airborne Division and it looks like he spent most of his time in the 2d Brigade. According to his awards, he has one rotation to Afghanistan, he earned an Expert Infantryman Badge along with a Combat Infantryman Badge (a stellar accomplishment right there).<\/p>\n

As near as I can determine, that Task Force 141 which gets a mention in the Argus Leader article above is a Call of Duty video game unit – so that part of his biography might be true, but I’m pretty sure that combat veterans don’t want to hear about his exploits on his couch over the weekend. And, yes, that picture of him at the top of the page seems to be a mugshot.<\/p>\n
