The folks at Military Phonies<\/a> send us their work on this fellow, Gregory Lee Kump who ran for the US Senate seat from Maryland in 2010, to no real effect. During the campaign, he highlighted his service in the US Marine Corps, of course. He claims that he served for more than 20 years, that he retired as a first sergeant, that he earned Bronze Stars and Purple Hearts, that he was Recon and Special Operations. <\/p>\n

In some online forums, he added a Silver Star;<\/p>\n

He also claimed that he was in 1\/8th Marines, the unit attacked at the Beirut barracks in October 1983 by suicide bombers;<\/p>\n

The truth is vastly different. He was a Marine for three years (not 20 years), but he was in 2\/6 Marines, the folks who relieved 1\/8 Marines in Beirut. His records indicate awards that he might have earned in Beirut including the Combat Action Ribbon, but there are no Purple Hearts, no Bronze Stars, no Silver Star. He left the Marine Corps as a Private, not a First Sergeant. He was a machinegunner, but not a Recon Marine or Special Operations like he claims.<\/p>\n

His records also say that he spent some time AWOL which would explain his meteoric rise to the rank of private in three years.<\/p>\n

But, here’s the really strange part – he ran for the US Senate, but there are no pictures of him on the internet that I can find. That makes me believe that he wasn’t the politician that he thinks. He also claims that he worked for the CIA, i don’t have anything to prove he didn’t, but I’m thinking that the CIA wouldn’t take a chance on a fellow prone to going AWOL.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
