Almost a year ago we wrote about Gary Briggs<\/a> who swears up and down that he was a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam. The calender is against him. There is a Vietnam Service Medal in his records, but the end date for the award of the VSM is April 30, 1975. On that date, Mr. Briggs was in route from boot camp at the Great Lakes Training Center to his first station in Philadelphia;<\/p>\n

It looks like someone erroneously added the VSM to Brigg’s records while he was hand carrying his records at some point. It seems simple, right? Well, Mr Briggs so wanted to be a member of the local Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club, when they held a hearing on whether he could continue to be a member of the club or not after our first post about him, he showed them a certificate. There is no such thing as a Vietnam Service Medal certificate, well unless you go online and buy a fake VSM certificate, like I did;<\/p>\n

I was 14 years old in August 1970, so obviously, I wasn’t in Vietnam, I wasn’t in Lima Company Rangers, but for about $20, I bought a certificate that says I was in Vietnam with absolutely no documentation. Now, if Gary’s motorcycle club really wanted to know whether his certificate is real or not, they could look at the back of it;<\/p>\n

Bob Neener<\/a>, the guy I bought this certificate from, did 3 years hard jail time for selling fake certificates so he’s especially careful about his disclaimers these days. My point by doing this little experiment is to demonstrate that certificates are useless. Especially when the Department of Defense never issued certificates for service medals. Everyone with certificates for their OIF\/OEF, SWASM, VSM raise your hands – see? No one.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
