He was one of about 60 backpackers gathered at sunrise for a “Carry the Fallen” march from the Hope Road boat launch in Bethlehem Township, Pa., to Easton’s Centre Square and back again. The heavy packs the backpackers wore were symbolic of the emotional burdens veterans carry. <\/p>\n
“I felt it’s my responsibility to carry on their memory,” Sonier, an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran who served in the Battles of Fallujah, said of his friends. The march “just seemed like something I should do.”

A few of his friends have died, two from suicide. This has been an especially tough year for Sonier. He surmised it’s because of the recent 10-year anniversary of Fallujah.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
