A Smyrna city worker shot a man who was attempting to carjack a woman’s vehicle on Friday, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Police said a good Samaritan shot the driver, stopping the theft and saving the woman.<\/p>\n

The car wash\u2019s surveillance cameras recorded the incident. The video shows the men inside a red minivan scoping out the parking lot and then the woman jumping onto the hood of her car as they tried to drive away with the Honda.<\/p>\n

Seconds later, a gunshot stopped the getaway as the city worker shot the carjacker, and the Honda\u2019s owner safely slid off the hood of the car.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Cedar Lake Police Chief Jerry Smith said the woman told police she was in an upstairs bedroom sleeping when her barking dogs woke her up.<\/p>\n

She said she went downstairs to investigate why the dogs were upset and, not seeing anything, returned upstairs.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, the dogs barked again. She grabbed a handgun from her bedroom, went back downstairs, and saw what appeared to be a man standing in the doorway of her sunroom.<\/p>\n

She told police she yelled at the man and fired one shot, scaring him off.<\/p>\n

Smith said the man was last seen running and jumping fences along the lake side of the home. Smith said Cedar Lake police officers and Lake County sheriff\u2019s police, assisted by the St. John K-9 officer, searched the area.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
