My guess is Snowden&#8217;s first mention of a possible return was a &#8220;trial baloon&#8221;, and he got word (or correctly read the tea leaves) that he&#8217;d almost certainly end up doing time.<\/p>\n<p>So now he appears to be backpedaling.
