Last July, the story of 80-year-old Thomas Greer came across my desk and I held off on it. In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-no-charges-home-burglary-20150126-story.html\">California<\/a>, Greer was beaten by a woman and a man who forced him at gun point to open his safe and give them about $5000 from it. <\/p>\n<p>As they were escaping, Mr. Greer got his own gun and shot Andrea Miller in the back twice even though she begged him not to shoot, telling him that she was pregnant (she wasn&#8217;t). Mr Greer was arrested, but just last month, the prosecutor said;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Greer, who was robbed on two other occasions, &#8220;held a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily injury,&#8221; wrote Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Janet Moore, explaining the office&#8217;s decision not to charge him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Greer exercised his legal and legitimate right of self-defense when he shot and killed Andrea Miller,&#8221; Moore wrote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He wasn&#8217;t prosecuted. Miller&#8217;s accomplices, Gus Adams and his mother, the getaway driver,  were captured and charged with her murder.
