Can you say, \u201cLois Lerner\u201d? Sure. I knew you could. (smile)<\/p>\n
For those who\u2019ve forgotten: Lois Lerner was the former head of the IRS division that rules on nonprofit groups\u2019 applications for tax-exempt status. That division was caught apparently blatantly playing politics with nonprofit applications \u2013 e.g., fast-tracking those of leftist groups, while slow-rolling and otherwise obstructing those of conservatives.<\/p>\n
Lerner later resigned, and has \u201ctaken the Fifth\u201d when asked to testify in Congress. Conveniently, tens of thousands of her official IRS emails from the period greatest interest for the scandal were \u201clost\u201d. The same happened to emails of some of her closest associates who were also believed to have been hip-deep in the scandal.<\/p>\n

Lerner\u2019s emails were initially held to be \u201clost permanently\u201d \u2013 until very recently, that is. Now, it appears that the IRS has now magically \u201cfound\u201d some \u201cdisaster recovery tapes\u201d from the period in question that contain many if not all of Lerner\u2019s missing emails<\/a>.<\/p>\n Now, maybe it\u2019s just me. But if I had a bunch of, you know, missing email \u2013 and I had a disaster recovery system in-place that stored stuff like, say, copies of email traffic or email databases\/transaction records \u2013 those records would probably be one of the first<\/span> places I\u2019d look for a bunch of missing emails to\/from a high-ranking official. But apparently the IRS doesn\u2019t do things that way.<\/p>\n Or maybe it took so long because of, well, some little thing like an \u201cupcoming Congressional election\u201d. Nah \u2013 that can\u2019t be it. The \u201cmost transparent administration in history\u201d would never pull such an underhanded trick. Besides, that would require blatantly lying to Federal investigators and Congress multiple times. They\u2019d NEVER stoop that low!<\/p>\n In any case, it will still take a while to recover Lerner\u2019s emails from those tapes. But you might want to follow this one for a while.\u00a0 It looks like this just might get even more interesting.<\/p>\n That just breaks my heart.
