{"id":55859,"date":"2014-10-17T07:30:58","date_gmt":"2014-10-17T11:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=55859"},"modified":"2014-10-17T08:26:14","modified_gmt":"2014-10-17T12:26:14","slug":"how-has-most-of-africa-avoided-ebola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=55859","title":{"rendered":"How Has Most of Africa Avoided Ebola?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We all know about the West Africa Ebola outbreak that&#8217;s ravaging Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.\u00a0 There&#8217;s also a smaller outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; that outbreak appears to be contained now, and is unrelated to and over 1000 miles away from the West Africa outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, we&#8217;re not seeing massive spread of Ebola to other countries in Africa.\u00a0 Cote d&#8217;Ivoire, Mali, and Guinea-Bisseau &#8211; all nations in the immediate vicinity of the West African Ebola outbreak &#8211; have no cases.\u00a0 And the two nations that did initially record secondary spread, Senegal and Nigeria, have each contained their outbreaks and will be declared Ebola-free by WHO NLT Monday barring any new cases appearing there.<\/p>\n<p>How did Senegal, a nation next to Guinea, end up with fewer Ebola cases than the US?\u00a0 And how did the rest of Africa avoid the spread of Ebola from the West African outbreak so far?<\/p>\n<p>Well, IMO here&#8217;s your answer &#8211; in &#8220;Powerpoint hell&#8221; bullet-point style:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BORDER CLOSURES<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<h1>LUCK<\/h1>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You see, in much of Africa they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">actually understand<\/span> how deadly this Ebola crap can be.\u00a0 So they treat it accordingly &#8211; like the deadly threat it is.\u00a0 Governments there don&#8217;t worry about offending some group of &#8220;special little snowflakes&#8221; because they&#8217;re being &#8220;mean&#8221;.\u00a0 They do what&#8217;s required to protect themselves.<\/p>\n<p>And even then, they know they&#8217;ve been damn lucky so far.<\/p>\n<p>What they <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">don&#8217;t<\/span> do is treat an Ebola outbreak like a pawn in a political game,\u00a0 some humanitarian feelgood exercise, or something minor like the common cold.\u00a0 <em>Because Ebola freaking <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">isn&#8217;t<\/span> any of those.\u00a0 It&#8217;s an incurable, relatively easily transmitted disease for which no vaccine exists that generally kills 50+% of those it infects<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/A\/AF_EBOLA_AFRICA_CONTAINMENT?SITE=AP&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&amp;CTIME=2014-10-16-14-24-38\">The AP has a good story<\/a> discussing how African nations next door to the outbreak (and elsewhere on the continent) have remained Ebola-free &#8211; or beaten it after it was introduced by travelers.
