The U.S. Navy has confirmed “unexplained irregularities” in the paperwork of an Iowa military veteran who received one of the nation’s highest military honors from Sen. Tom Harkin’s office, a spokeswoman for the senator said in a statement Wednesday.<\/p>\n
“Senator Harkin intends to ensure that the Navy completes a full investigation, arrives at the true historical record and that appropriate sanctions are issued, if warranted,” his spokeswoman Susannah Cernojevich said.<\/p>\n
The investigation comes hours after publication of a Des Moines Register article in which several military groups or advocates questioned whether Dennis William Myers, 64, of Marshalltown provided Harkin with bogus documentation showing him as a recipient of the Silver Star medal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
I guess Harkin’s office finally noticed that their vmail box was full and their fax machine was overfilled. But, the Navy has already conducted a “full investigation” and found Mr Meyers completely FOS.<\/p>\n
Myers told The Register in interviews last week that much of his military record doesn’t appear on written documents because he was part of undercover operations. He said his record was updated to reflect the Silver Star in December 2013 even though that’s not reflected in the records provided Aug. 19 by the National Personnel Records Center.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
