Mary and Don Shipley send us the story in Auburn (Washington State) Reporter<\/a> about the sad death of John Marcus Alberti who died alone in the hospital in April. Two of his friends went digging for information about his life and somewhere they found his military “records”;<\/p>\n

After reading through his record they discovered that Alberti had been a highly-decorated Navy SEAL.<\/p>\n

Alberti received extensive training during his tenure: six months underwater demolition training; two months of airborne training with the SEALs; Navy special war training; five months training in intelligence with the CIA; and other operations.<\/p>\n

He completed courses in rapid deployment, strike force, command school, paramedics, and crypto\/communications and had other special training.<\/p>\n

After five years in Vietnam, he came home highly decorated: Navy Cross; two Silver Stars; Bronze Star; Vietnam Service with Clusters; President Unit Citation; Individual Presidents Citation (he was personally decorated by President John F. Kennedy); Special Operations Citation; Navy Commendation; military Advisor Medal; and five Purple Hearts.<\/p>\n

Records show he was in five major battles: 1959 Long Xuyen; 1960 Saigon; 1961 Phu Vihn; 1963 Danang; and 1964 Can Tho.He was a prisoner of war from March to October 1962. No information was available regarding his release.<\/p>\n

Alberti was discharged on Sept. 24, 1965, leaving the service with the rank of Senior Chief Gunners Mate E-8. He was born Sept. 24, joined Sept. 24, re-enlisted Sept. 24 and was discharged Sept. 24.<\/p>\n

At the time of his discharge, Alberti refused all military benefits.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There’s probably a good reason that he refused all military benefits; he’d been outed at the old POW Network in 2006 as a phony who had never served even one day ever in the military in any service;<\/p>\n

So the military records that his friends “found” were actually the phony military records that poor John had fabricated. And now the last laugh is on Alberti’s friends and the veterans who took part in the ceremony and laid his cremated remains to rest beneath this marker commemorating a career that never happened among real heroes who really did serve;<\/p>\n
