The Christian Science Monitor<\/a> reports that Iraq\u2019s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has rejected a plan for a “unity government” in the face of the ISIS vanguard marching on Baghdad. Hiding behind the Iraqi constitution, Maliki calling the option a “coup:;<\/p>\n

In his weekly address to the nation, Mr. Maliki gave what the Associated Press describes as a \u201cvague call\u201d for political forces to reconcile under the principles of Iraq\u2019s constitution, without giving specific promises of inclusiveness for minority Sunnis. <\/p>\n

Maliki firmly rejected calls for a \u201cnational salvation\u201d government in the televised address, saying such calls amounted to \u201ca coup against the constitution and the political process,\u201d according to Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n

International observers, particularly in the US, have increasingly called upon Maliki to form a unity government in the face of the Sunni insurgency sweeping across Iraq. Iraq’s Sunnis have been marginalized by Maliki’s predominantly Shiite government, spurring them to join up with militants from the Islamic State of Syria and the Levant (ISIS) as they advanced into Iraq. US Secretary of State John Kerry in Baghdad on Monday urged Maliki to \u201cbe inclusive and share power\u201d in order to boost Iraq\u2019s defense.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Of course, Maliki worries that once the emergency is over, he’ll be out of a job. And, I’m sure he thinks that the tiny contingent of American troops forming up in Iraq will be like the cavalry and rescue him from the savages circling his wagons.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile ISIS is on the verge of taking Balad airbase<\/a>, Syria has sent airstrikes into Iraq against ISIS<\/a> and three Iranian soldiers were killed<\/a> by “an unspecified “terrorist group”” while they patrolled their side of the border with Iraq. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
