{"id":50111,"date":"2014-06-08T06:00:47","date_gmt":"2014-06-08T10:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=50111"},"modified":"2014-06-07T16:51:14","modified_gmt":"2014-06-07T20:51:14","slug":"thomas-keller-ten-years-for-stealing-from-dav","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=50111","title":{"rendered":"Thomas Keller: Ten years for stealing from DAV"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marine_7002 sends us a link to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freep.com\/article\/20140607\/NEWS07\/306070054\/veterans-charity-theft-sentence\">Detroit Free Press<\/a> in regards to Thomas Keller who was sentenced to 10 years &#8220;in custody&#8221; Friday for stealing $160,281.99 from the Disabled American Veterans organization;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>He tried and failed to choke back tears as he offered more apologies during testimony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to say to the veterans that I\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m sorry I let you down,\u201d he said. Throughout his sentencing hearing, he maintained that he stole the funds because he had been ill, lost his job and fallen behind on bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you steal? Did you do it to support your lifestyle?\u201d prosecutors asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still had to pay utilities,\u201d he answered, adding that his motorcycle had been repossessed and his house foreclosed upon.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>When prosecutors mentioned that some of the checks were written to Staples, Comcast and Verizon, Keller became almost hostile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith all due respect, I\u2019ve already plead guilty. I\u2019ve taken full responsibility,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Keller said he just started taking a few bucks at a time, but it was like a drug, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>The organization asked him for a full financial accounting back in 2010 and instead of doing that, he&#8217;d hoped they&#8217;d just forget about it, then he dropped out of sight when they called for a complete audit.
