{"id":49372,"date":"2014-05-31T12:59:32","date_gmt":"2014-05-31T16:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=49372"},"modified":"2014-05-31T12:59:32","modified_gmt":"2014-05-31T16:59:32","slug":"dc-tax-office-employee-embezzled-thousands-from-vet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=49372","title":{"rendered":"DC Tax Office employee embezzled thousands from vet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Tango sends us a link to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/crime\/dc-tax-worker-stole-114000-from-military-retiree\/2014\/05\/31\/1b46d38a-e83b-11e3-a86b-362fd5443d19_story.html?hpid=z2\">Washington Post<\/a> which reports that Catyondia Ballard embezzled $114,000 from the account of a veteran at the Armed Forces Retirement Home on North Capitol Street in order to pay off her own home. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The scheme began in March 2007 and continued through April 2010, ending only after retirement home staff noticed the former service member was behind in payments to the care facility, court files show. An attorney helping the victim called the city to ask about his income-tax payments and spoke to Ballard, who said she \u201cwas acquainted\u201d with the victim because of a previous review of his tax matters, court records state.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The tax office was supposed to have tightened up their security after the conviction of Harriet Walters for stealing over $50 million in 2012 from her position in the Tax Office. What? You didn&#8217;t hear about that one? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=3743\">We wrote about it<\/a> back then. You&#8217;d think that the theft of $50 million would have been on the news, wouldn&#8217;t you? <\/p>\n<p>Every year that I lived in DC, the Tax Office would  send me a notice telling me that I owed them a few thousand dollars, and every year I had to go and meet with an agent and prove that I didn&#8217;t.
