{"id":46794,"date":"2014-05-14T13:30:29","date_gmt":"2014-05-14T17:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=46794"},"modified":"2014-05-15T10:19:57","modified_gmt":"2014-05-15T14:19:57","slug":"an-arlington-article","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=46794","title":{"rendered":"An Arlington Article"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Navy Times<\/em> recently published an interesting, if short, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/article\/20140511\/NEWS\/305110026\/After-150-years-Arlington-Cemetery-still-holds-secrets\">article on Arlington National Cemetery.<\/a>\u00a0 It gives a brief rundown of the Cemetery&#8217;s history, and gives a few vital statistics.<\/p>\n<p>The article also lists a few less-well-known facts about the cemetery.\u00a0 Three examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Cemetery&#8217;s founder&#8217;s son &#8211; Lieutenant John Rodgers Meigs, son of cemetery founder MG Montgomery Meigs &#8211; is buried there.<\/li>\n<li>Tombstones with gold lettering (there are over 400) are the final resting place of Medal of Honor recipients.<\/li>\n<li>A 3-year-old girl who perished on board American Airlines Flight 77 at the Pentagon on 11 September 2001 whose remains were never identified is memorialized in Arlington, only several hundred feet from the Pentagon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are a number of other fascinating facts in the short article, with brief explanations\/background for each.\u00a0 If you have a few minutes, IMO reading it is definitely worth the time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Author&#8217;s note<\/span>:\u00a0 as multiple commenters have noted below, the identity of the 3 year old buried in the mass grave for the Pentagon is in fact known.\u00a0 As the <a href=\"http:\/\/arlingtoncemetery.net\/pentagon-unidentified03.htm\">link provided by Fm2176 notes<\/a>, the name of the young girl killed at the Pentagon\u00a0was Dana Falkenberg.\u00a0 The original <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Navy Times<\/span> article indicated the young girl&#8217;s remains were &#8220;unidentified&#8221; and buried in a mass grave at Arlington.\u00a0 However, the Navy Times not indicate that her identity was in fact known and did not give her name.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In fact, no individually-identifiable remains were ever found for Falkenberg and four other individuals &#8211; Rhonda Rasmussen, Ronald Hemenway, James Lynch, and Ronald Golinski.\u00a0 Falkenberg and these other four individuals are memorialized in the mass grave for 9\/11 at Arlington.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>My apologies for the error in the original article.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Navy Times recently published an interesting, if short, article on Arlington National Cemetery.\u00a0 It gives &hellip; <a title=\"An Arlington Article\" class=\"hm-read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=46794\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">An Arlington Article<\/span>Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":623,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[10],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-46794","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-historical"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/46794","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/623"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=46794"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/46794\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=46794"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=46794"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=46794"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
