{"id":46787,"date":"2014-05-13T17:00:02","date_gmt":"2014-05-13T21:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=46787"},"modified":"2014-05-13T13:36:37","modified_gmt":"2014-05-13T17:36:37","slug":"a-cultural-icon-ceases-print","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=46787","title":{"rendered":"A Cultural Icon Ceases Print"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, an American cultural icon ceased print publication.\u00a0 After 60 years, <em>Jet<\/em> <em>Magazine<\/em> announced last Wednesday that it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/codeswitch\/2014\/05\/07\/310529571\/after-6-decades-jet-magazine-decides-to-go-all-digital\">moving to an all-digital business model<\/a>.\u00a0 It will cease publishing a printed edition.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be the first to admit that <em>Jet <\/em>wasn&#8217;t my &#8220;cup of tea&#8221;.\u00a0 But I did on occasion look at it &#8211; and when I was younger, it was fairly common.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jet<\/em> was indeed a US cultural icon.\u00a0 In its early days, it was instrumental in helping the Civil Rights movement get traction, publishing the photos of Emitt Till&#8217;s badly disfigured body to show how he&#8217;d been abused when he was killed.\u00a0 And it provided Black America with a source of news and commentary not readily found elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Declining readership finally did <em>Jet<\/em> in.\u00a0 Recent years haven&#8217;t been kind to most brick\/mortar\/paper magazines, and Jet was no exception.<\/p>\n<p>The US will survive without <em>Jet<\/em>, of course.\u00a0 And one can argue whether it&#8217;s a loss worth mourning or not.<\/p>\n<p>But regardless of ancestry, IMO we&#8217;ve all lost something.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t help but feel we&#8217;ve lost a bit of Americana with <em>Jet&#8217;s<\/em> passing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, an American cultural icon ceased print publication.\u00a0 After 60 years, Jet Magazine announced last &hellip; <a title=\"A Cultural Icon Ceases Print\" class=\"hm-read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=46787\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">A Cultural Icon Ceases Print<\/span>Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":623,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[172,26,170],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-46787","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-geezer-alert","category-blather","category-who-knows"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/46787","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/623"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=46787"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/46787\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=46787"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=46787"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=46787"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
