Well, it looks like another \u201cgreen vehicle\u201d manufacturer is on the ropes.\u00a0 After taking taxpayers for the proverbial \u201csleigh ride in July\u201d for tens of millions, of course.<\/p>\n

Smith Electric Vehicles was touted as another \u201cgreen\u201d vehicle maker.\u00a0 It was to specialize in large electric vehicles suitable for commercial use.\u00a0 It originally announced plans to make over 500 such vehicles.<\/p>\n

In return for $1.4 million in tax credits from Missouri, Smith promised to create 200+ new jobs.\u00a0 It\u2019s hired 54 people to date.<\/p>\n

Smith owes large sums to various creditors.\u00a0 The precise amount isn\u2019t known, but since it includes a $30k+ debt to a Missouri university and six months\u2019 back rent on 90,000 sq ft of space at the Kansas City airport, the total could easily be hundreds of thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s stopped production.<\/p>\n

Of course, since this was one of the Administration\u2019s pet \u201cgreen\u201d projects \u2013 the POTUS touted it publicly in a speech at the Kansas City airport 4 years ago \u2013 it got some $30+ million in Federal stimulus funds.\u00a0 Anyone surprised?<\/p>\n

The Washington Examiner<\/span> has a good article on Smith<\/a>, its troubles, and its past problems (which go far beyond what I’ve listed here).\u00a0 It\u2019s worth reading \u2013 providing you don\u2019t have high blood pressure or anger management issues.<\/p>\n

Yeah, looks like that \u201cgreen\u201d stimulus program worked out just swimmingly here.\u00a0 One could even be cynical and say it looks almost like a political payback or \u201cmake work\u201d deal.\u00a0 But that can\u2019t possibly be the case.<\/p>\n
