Well, it turns out it isn\u2019t so \u201cGreen\u201d after all.<\/p>\n

A peer-reviewed study published in Nature Climate Change<\/span> recently looked at alcohol produced from corn waste (e.g., cobs, stalks, leaves).\u00a0 These items are normally plowed under and allowed to decompose, thus enriching the soil for upcoming growing seasons, but can also be processed to produce alcohol.<\/p>\n

The Federal government paid $500k for the study.\u00a0 And they probably won\u2019t like the results.<\/p>\n

Researchers conducting the study found that the corn-waste alcohol produced approximately 7 percent more greenhouse gases over the short-term<\/a> than simply using gasoline instead.\u00a0 In other words: the so-called \u201cGreen\u201d fuel is actually worse<\/em> for the environment than using gasoline from crude oil.<\/p>\n

Given this result, such fuel would not appear to qualify for the current Federal $1 per gallon subsidy necessary to make it price competitive, either.<\/p>\n

Predictably, proponents \u2013 both industrial and environmentalists \u2013 of corn-waste biofuels have attacked the study.\u00a0 Now, what vested interest would make them do that?<\/p>\n

Oh, yeah, I remember now why they’d attack the results:\u00a0 money.\u00a0 Your and my tax money, going to them or their pet causes.<\/p>\n
