I got an email this morning from DC area sports-fiend and all around great guy “The Sports Curmudgeon<\/a>.” (As a sidenote, if you like sports, go to his site and sign up for his newsletter which is phenomenal.)<\/p>\n

He covers a little of everything in his rants, but today it had this:<\/p>\n

I can understand if you tuned into the first game of the World Series last night and heard the Backstreet Boys massacre the National Anthem how you might have hit the remote and gone to another channel. That was one of the most brutal renditions of the anthem that I have ever heard – – and major sports events have been the venue for more than a few really awful renditions. Let me say five things to any and all \u201cartists\u201d invited to sing the National Anthem at any future sporting event:
\n1. The anthem has words. Stick to them.
\n2. The anthem has a melody. Sing the melody.
\n3. The anthem is a song; it is not a mini-series. It can \u2013 and should \u2013 be finished in 90 seconds.
\n4. Singing the anthem is an honor – – not a time for you to demonstrate your interpretation of the musical piece.
\n5. Sing the song; wave to the crowd; shut up; leave so the game can begin.
\nHere is a question for the Rays\u2019 management who booked those clowns to sing the anthem:
\nAre you sure William Hung already had a gig for last night?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Thinking perhaps he was merely being curmudgeonly, I went and watch it at youtube. Nope, he’s right. It sucked. There is only one acceptible version of the National Anthem for sporting events, with the possible exception of being able to do the Little Richard version from the movie Mystery, Alaska.<\/p>\n
