{"id":394,"date":"2007-05-30T13:02:54","date_gmt":"2007-05-30T17:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/2007\/05\/30\/not-much-news-out-of-venezuela-huh\/"},"modified":"2007-05-31T19:11:05","modified_gmt":"2007-05-31T23:11:05","slug":"not-much-news-out-of-venezuela-huh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=394","title":{"rendered":"Not much news out of Venezuela, huh?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Funny how there was a flurry of news reports the other day from Venezuela after Hugo Chavez ordered opposition TV station RCTV closed and Venezuelans took to the streets, but now there&#8217;s barely a peep.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/images\/286825\/0_61_052707_venezuala_riot.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Chavez decision apparently is effecting the financial markets there, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601086&#038;sid=aPAMmph8Wjzw\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Venezuela&#8217;s bonds fell to an 11-month low after the government&#8217;s shutdown of Radio Caracas Television sparked clashes between police and protesters.<\/p>\n<p>* * * * *<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Venezuela is underperforming, reflecting the latest move against the television station,&#8221; said Alberto Ramos, a senior Latin America economist with Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in New York. &#8220;Every single iteration reminds us of the moves against institutions that erode checks and balances in Venezuela.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That prompted Venezuela&#8217;s announcement that they&#8217;ll be selling joint bonds\u00c2\u00a0with Bolivia this year, as reported by\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/aspxcontent\/NewsStory.aspx?cpath=20070530%5cACQDJON200705301206DOWJONESDJONLINE000787.htm&#038;\" target=\"_blank\">Dow Jones<\/a>; \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Venezuela&#8217;s government plans to sell $500 million in bonds through a joint issue with the Bolivian government, as the country extends its debt issuance program, Finance Minister Rodrigo Cabezas said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The bond with Bolivia could be sold in the first half of this year, Cabezas told reporters after a finance commission meeting.<\/p>\n<p>President Hugo Chavez&#8217;s administration is also looking to sell another joint bond with Argentina, dubbed the Bond of the South III, for between $500 million and $1 billion, Cabezas said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What bubblehead would risk their capital in South American debt given the current climate?\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/05\/01\/AR2006050100583.html\" target=\"_blank\">Evo Morales<\/a>, President of Bolivia and\u00c2\u00a0Chavez&#8217; poodle,\u00c2\u00a0throwing his country&#8217;s treasury in with Chavez&#8217; is guaranteeing a massive meltdown when those interest payments come due.<\/p>\n<p>Bonds are only as good as the debtor&#8217;s ability to pay, and the investors&#8217; willingness to buy debt\u00c2\u00a0&#8211; and things ain&#8217;t looking so good down there. Seizing oil fields and gas fields isn&#8217;t going to make foreigners want to buy &#8211; especially buy debt. Of course, it&#8217;ll somehow be the US&#8217; fault.<\/p>\n<p>And Chavez isn&#8217;t done destroying the infrastructure in Venezuela yet, either, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/world\/la-fg-venez30may30,1,6407937.story?track=rss\" target=\"_blank\">according to Reuters<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0today;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As tens of thousands of people marched here Tuesday in protest of President Hugo Chavez&#8217;s closure of opposition television station RCTV, the leftist leader called the news channel Globovision an enemy of the state.<\/p>\n<p>The protests were in their fourth consecutive day, but state television showed hundreds of government supporters marching in downtown Caracas to celebrate Chavez&#8217;s move.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Enemies of the homeland, particularly those behind the scenes, I will give you a name: Globovision. Greetings gentlemen of Globovision, you should watch where you are going,&#8221; Chavez said in a broadcast that all channels were required to show.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I recommend you take a tranquilizer and get into gear, because if not, I am going to do what is necessary,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Chavez accused Globovision of trying to incite his assassination and of misreporting protests over the closure of Radio Caracas Television in a manner that could whip up a situation similar to a coup attempt against him in 2002.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But that hasn&#8217;t stopped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globovision.com\/news.php?nid=57059\" target=\"_blank\">Globovision<\/a> from reporting favorably on the anti-Chavez protests today;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A las 11:00 de la ma\u00c3\u00b1ana se concentraron en la Plaza Bri\u00c3\u00b3n de Chacaito j\u00c3\u00b3venes estudiantes de las universidades Cat\u00c3\u00b3lica, Central, Santa Mar\u00c3\u00ada, Jos\u00c3\u00a9 Mar\u00c3\u00ada Vargas, UNEFA, Metropolitana, con la intenci\u00c3\u00b3n de marchar a la Defensor\u00c3\u00ada del Pueblo, donde exigir\u00c3\u00adan al organismo defender sus derechos fundamentales.<\/p>\n<p>(A rough translation: At 11 am this morning a concentration in [some town square] young students of [some universities] assembled with the intention to march on\u00c2\u00a0People&#8217;s Defense Office\u00c2\u00a0organized to defend\u00c2\u00a0the \u00c2\u00a0fundamental rights of citizens.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From Venezuela&#8217;s English-language newspaper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dj.com.ve\/txtPagina3.htm\" target=\"_blank\">The Daily Journal<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font size=\"2\">Information Minister Willian Lara on Monday accused Globovisi\u00c3\u00b3n of encouraging an attempt on Ch\u00c3\u00a1vez\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 life by broadcasting the chorus of a salsa tune \u00e2\u20ac\u201c \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Have faith, this doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t end here\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c along with footage of the 1981 assassination attempt against Pope John Paul II in St. Peter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Square.<br \/>\n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They incite the assassination of Venezuela\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s president,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he said.<br \/>\nGlobovisi\u00c3\u00b3n director Alberto Federico Ravell denied any wrongdoing, calling the allegations \u00e2\u20ac\u0153ridiculous.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Today&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diariolavoz.net\/seccion.asp?pid=18&#038;sid=424&#038;notid=223949\" target=\"_blank\">La Voz<\/a> (The Voice) headline reads; &#8220;<span class=\"dettit\">Estudiantes no abandonan las calles&#8221; (The students won&#8217;t give up the streets)<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chavez needs enemies, either real ones or pretend ones to circumvent the laws &#8211; that&#8217;s why he needed Bush as his chief boogieman and he fired up the crowds with <a href=\"http:\/\/english.aljazeera.net\/NR\/exeres\/48C9E596-7D2D-496B-987F-6F1A83DE9842.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Bush&#8217;s evil intentions to assasinate him<\/a>. Of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2006\/WORLD\/americas\/09\/20\/chavez.un\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">his strut around the UN last year<\/a> was just playing to the cameras for folks back home &#8211; just like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/0,2933,206204,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Chavez&#8217; pledge of support for Iran<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0was playing to the US cameras for the anti-Bush Left.<\/p>\n<p>All ya&#8217;all Venezuelans better not be around when\u00c2\u00a0Chavez runs out of enemies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/0,2933,276356,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">According to AP<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The State Department on Tuesday called on the Chavez government &#8220;to reverse policies that limit freedom of expression.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, I haven&#8217;t heard any of the so-called &#8220;liberals&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0condemning the loss of freedom for Venezuelans to hear an opinion\u00c2\u00a0that might be opposed to the government&#8217;s. Where are they?
