There will be a notice published in the Federal Register<\/a> on Monday that John Kerry signed on December 31st, in which he designated two terrorist groups in Libya as terrorist groups.<\/p>\n

I hereby determine that the entity known as Ansar al-Shari\u2019a in Benghazi, also known as Ansar al-Sharia in Libya, also known as Ansar al-Shariah Brigade, also known as Ansar al-Shari\u2019a Brigade, also known as Katibat Ansar al-Sharia in Benghazi, also known as Ansar al-Shariah-Benghazi, also known as Al-Raya Establishment for Media Production, also known as Ansar al-Sharia, also known as Soldiers of the Sharia, also known as Ansar al-Shariah, also known as Supporters of Islamic Law, committed, or poses a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism that threaten the security of U.S. nationals or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In fact, there are six notices being published Monday<\/a>; four notices for Ansar al-Shari\u2019a variants in Libya and two more in Tunisia. The leader of Ansar al-Shari\u2019a in Benghazi is a fellow named Abu Sufian bin Qumu according to this link from NBC News<\/a> sent to us by Pinto Nag;<\/p>\n

The groups are Ansar al-Sharia in Benghazi and Ansar al-Sharia in Darnah. Their leaders, Ahmed Abu Khattalah and Sufian bin Qumu, were designated as global terrorists by the State Department.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Abu Sufian bin Qumu was captured in Pakistan in 2002 and spent five years in Guantanamo before he was repatriated to Qaddafi’s Libya, which then turned around and released him three years later. He went to Afghanistan to fight the Russians. After they left the country, he went to work as a truck driver for one of bin Laden’s construction companies in Sudan, then returned to Afghanistan and joined the Taliban and reportedly joined al Qaeda.<\/p>\n

Yet, the New York Times can find no connection<\/a> to al Qaeda. Kerry signed the notice three days after the New York Times published their article.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
