{"id":38956,"date":"2013-12-21T08:02:37","date_gmt":"2013-12-21T13:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=38956"},"modified":"2013-12-21T08:02:37","modified_gmt":"2013-12-21T13:02:37","slug":"big-red-one-to-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=38956","title":{"rendered":"Big Red One to Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/article\/20131220\/NEWS\/312200013\/Army-sends-troops-South-Sudan-gear-African-Union\">The Army Times<\/a> reports that 45 soldiers from the 2d brigade of the 1st Infantry Division have deployed to the Sudan to protect State Department employees as they evacuate the country;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Given the worsening fighting in South Sudan\u2014which broke off from Sudan after years of bloody fighting in 2011 \u2014 the State Department declared that all non-essential staffers would be flown out of the country on U.S. C-130 aircraft. The U.S. soldiers deployed there are overseeing their orderly evacuation, while protecting staff still at the embassy in Juba.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter to the Speaker of the House and the President Pro tempore of the Senate on Dec. 19, President Obama said that the soldiers are \u201cequipped for combat,\u201d but that \u201cthis force was deployed for the purpose of protecting U.S. citizens and property.
