day<\/em> is Groundhog Day when it comes to our Federal government.\u00a0 They simply don&#8217;t seem to learn a damn thing from past fiascos.<\/p>\n<p>Well, at least the current Administration doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>Remember the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=38297\">Lifeline fiasco<\/a> I wrote about the other day &#8211; that &#8220;free phone&#8221; program where the Federal government depended for years on unchecked self-certification to determine eligibility?\u00a0 Remember how well that worked out?<\/p>\n<p>Wanna guess how the Federal government is going to determine whether people qualify for tax credits under the new <del>Patently Phoney<\/del> Patient Privacy and <del>Absurd\u00a0<\/del> &#8216;Affordable&#8217; Care <del>Abomination<\/del> Act next year?\u00a0 C&#8217;mon &#8211; take a guess.<\/p>\n<p>But hey, I&#8217;m gonna be a hardass here.\u00a0 You only get one guess.<\/p>\n<p>If you guessed &#8220;self-certification with no requirement for backup documentation or cross-checking&#8221; &#8211; AKA the &#8220;honor system&#8221; &#8211; give yourself a freaking gold star.\u00a0 &#8216;Cause that&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy-policy\/2013\/11\/05\/fbi-gears-up-as-nearly-17m-poised-to-get-obamacare-tax-credits\/\">exactly how the Federal government plans to hand out PPACA-related tax credits next year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Until last year, that&#8217;s the same method the Federal government used to determine eligibility for Lifeline phones.\u00a0 Based on early indications from imposing cross-checking and requiring annual re-certification, looks like that program had about a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">41% fraud rate<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also how the Federal government determines eligibility today for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).\u00a0 That program is estimated to lose <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">20-25% of its total annual outlays to fraud<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Ya know, I kinda think I&#8217;m seeing a pattern here.\u00a0 But maybe it&#8217;s just me.<\/p>\n<p>Predictably, the FBI expects to see fraud related to this new tax credit &#8211; a LOT of fraud.\u00a0 They&#8217;re currently estimating we&#8217;ll see on the order of $20 billion in healthcare tax credit fraud next year.\u00a0 I think that might be in the ballpark &#8211; for the first year.\u00a0 Then it will skyrocket.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s possible that estimate could be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">way<\/span> low for the first year, too.<\/p>\n<p>Looks like it really is &#8220;Here we go again.&#8221;\u00a0 And remember:\u00a0 that&#8217;s yet another &#8220;bennie&#8221; to the US taxpayer, courtesy of the PPACA.\u00a0 So just grit your teeth and bend over.<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, that&#8217;s courtesy of the PPACA, too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I swear, sometimes I think every freakin&#8217;
