{"id":37757,"date":"2013-09-28T09:09:13","date_gmt":"2013-09-28T13:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=37757"},"modified":"2013-09-28T09:09:13","modified_gmt":"2013-09-28T13:09:13","slug":"congress-seeks-to-arm-troops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=37757","title":{"rendered":"Congress seeks to arm troops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chief Tango sends us a link to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/article\/20130927\/NEWS\/309270010\/Bill-would-let-troops-civilians-carry-guns-stateside-bases\">Army Times<\/a> article which reports that Congressman Steve Stockman, a Republican from Texas has introduced a bill that would allow troops to carry their personally owned weapons (POWs in Army parlance) while on their particular bases.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhy are civilians at a restaurant allowed to defend themselves but soldiers trained in firearms aren\u2019t?\u201d Stockman said. \u201cWhy can\u2019t we extend common-sense gun laws like open carry to our soldiers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Safe Military Bases Act, HR 3199, is Stockman\u2019s response to the Sept. 16 shooting at the Washington Navy Yard and is similar to legislation introduced after the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Stockman said mass shootings could be stopped if people on base carried their own guns.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s a reason that military experience counts towards many states&#8217; certification programs for weapons ownership and concealed carry permits &#8211; mostly that members of the military are well trained in the handling and safety measures regarding firearms. And they live and work in the biggest gun-free zones in the country &#8211; potential targets for every nut with evil intent to become famous.
