{"id":36701,"date":"2013-07-18T11:09:56","date_gmt":"2013-07-18T15:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=36701"},"modified":"2013-07-18T11:09:56","modified_gmt":"2013-07-18T15:09:56","slug":"about-that-idiotic-rolling-stone-cover-cross-posted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=36701","title":{"rendered":"About that idiotic Rolling Stone Cover (cross posted)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?attachment_id=36702\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36702\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36702\" alt=\"Rolling stone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Rolling-stone.jpg\" width=\"581\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Rolling-stone.jpg 581w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Rolling-stone-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Rolling-stone-500x289.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 581px) 100vw, 581px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I used to get Rolling Stone until 2010, when they ran a smear piece on General McChrystal and I called and cancelled.\u00a0 It&#8217;s certainly their right constitutionally speaking to write whatever they want that isn&#8217;t libelous, but then again it is my right as a consumer not to pay for it.\u00a0 I thought that article went too far, and from the point of view of a guy who does embeds with the military I have to keep stressing to units that &#8220;I&#8217;m not from Rolling Stone or the New York Times, I&#8217;m here to stress the positive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, I am a native Massachusian.\u00a0 I love my Red Sox, I love my Patriots, I love the Bruins, I love UMASS Basketball (more than my wife is comfortable with,) and I love chowder.\u00a0 I even have a Boston Terrier I named Fenway.\u00a0 (He&#8217;s my little black and white monster.)\u00a0 So, the Rolling Stone cover sort of had a visceral reaction with me too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Today we have a Big Q up on the legion website (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.legion.org\/media\/216484\/should-rolling-stone-have-featured-boston-bombing-suspect-dzhokhar-tsarnaev-its-cover\">you can vote HERE<\/a>) that my boss even asked me to write.\u00a0 I told him that I wouldn&#8217;t, probably in a more angry tone than I should have.\u00a0 The whole thing really makes me mad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A lot of folks will likely say that I should read the article before I cast aspersions.\u00a0 Yeah, I&#8217;m not going to do that.\u00a0 The article could clearly talk about what a monster this guy is (and it even says that in the title) but either way my feeling is that he shouldn&#8217;t be on the cover of something like this, certainly not in the same pose as the Doors&#8217; Jim Morrison.\u00a0 But Rolling Stone feels differently of course, as they make clear in the statement in the picture above.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, reaction has been swift.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/twitchy.com\/\">Twitchy.com has been monitoring the Twitter\u00a0reaction<\/a> since the beginning, and has some pretty choice quotes from companies, Bostonians and other Americans disgusted by it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Actor James Woods:\u00a0 First Amendment protects Rolling Stone, but nobody had to buy that\u00a0$#!^ rag. Boycott Rolling Stone. Put it out of business&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Dancing with the Stars&#8217; Tom Bergeron:\u00a0 Just saw the latest <a class=\"profile customisable h-card\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RollingStone\">@<strong class=\"p-nickname\">RollingStone<\/strong><\/a> cover. Unbelievable. Was this instead of their Al-Qaeda swimsuit edition?<\/p>\n<p>Actor Dean Cain:\u00a0 I never read Rolling Stone anyway&#8230;but now?\u00a0 <a class=\"hashtag customisable\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23ZeroChance&amp;src=hash\" rel=\"tag\" data-query-source=\"hashtag_click\">#<strong>ZeroChance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0 <a class=\"hashtag customisable\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23BostonBomber&amp;src=hash\" rel=\"tag\" data-query-source=\"hashtag_click\">#<strong>BostonBomber<\/strong><\/a>?\u00a0 <a class=\"hashtag customisable\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23MakesMeSick&amp;src=hash\" rel=\"tag\" data-query-source=\"hashtag_click\">#<strong>MakesMeSick<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>David Draiman of the band Disturbed:\u00a0 TO ALL OF MY COLLEAGUES AND FRIENDS IN THE INDUSTRY, PLEASE JOIN ME IN TAKING A STAND AGAINST GLORIFYING TERRORISM. <a class=\"hashtag customisable\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23BoycottRollingStone&amp;src=hash\" rel=\"tag\" data-query-source=\"hashtag_click\">#<strong>BoycottRollingStone<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Actor James Van Der Beek: Rolling Stone &#8211; No matter what the content of the article might be, you DO realize your cover space is all about glorification, right?<\/p>\n<p>Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids on the Block:\u00a0 I&#8217;d be remiss if I didn&#8217;t express my disappointment in <a class=\"profile customisable h-card\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RollingStone\">@<strong class=\"p-nickname\">rollingstone<\/strong><\/a> magazine&#8217;s cover. For many reasons, it just feels wrong. <a class=\"hashtag customisable\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23BostonStrong&amp;src=hash\" rel=\"tag\" data-query-source=\"hashtag_click\">#<strong>BostonStrong<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Singer\/Songwriter Brad Paisley: I have to say, the Rolling Stone Magazine cover with the bomber is in poor taste. We shouldn&#8217;t make rock stars out of murderers.<\/p>\n<p>MLB Pitcher Brad Ziegler: Never going to read Rolling Stone magazine again after this: <a class=\"link customisable\" title=\"http:\/\/fxn.ws\/16J0c6V\" href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/zUvmrTzjBm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-expanded-url=\"http:\/\/fxn.ws\/16J0c6V\"><span class=\"tco-hidden\">http:\/\/<\/span><span class=\"tco-display\">fxn.ws\/16J0c6V<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even Boston Mayor Menino, a man seldom noted for his great speaking ability leaped into the fray:\u00a0 Your August 3 cover rewards a terrorist with celebrity treatment&#8230;To respond to you in anger is to feed into your obvious marketing strategy&#8230;The survivors of the Boston attacks deserve Rolling Stone cover stories, though I no longer feel that Rolling Stone deserves them.\u00a0 (More on that at the bottom of this post.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile the response from retailers hasn&#8217;t been much better for Rolling Stone:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Kmart: Kmart will not be selling copies of the new Rolling Stone magazine out of respect for those impacted by the events of April 15th.<\/p>\n<p>Rite Aid: Out of respect to everyone affected by the Boston Marathon bombing, Rite Aid has decided not to sell the latest issue of Rolling Stone.<\/p>\n<p>CVS: We have decided to not sell the current issue of Rolling Stone, out of respect for the victims and their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>Walgreens: Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Walgreens will not be selling this issue of Rolling Stone magazine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Naturally others are complaining that the article wasn&#8217;t fair to the alleged (which is to say not YET convicted) bomber, with some continuing to claim it is all a hoax:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dear Rolling Stone magazine, &#8216;The Bomber&#8217; ? Prove it. I hope you get sued for defamation and slandering Jahar&#8217;s name.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/browbeat\/2013\/07\/17\/boston_bomber_rolling_stone_cover_with_dzokhar_tsarnaev_is_good_journalism.html\">Amanda Marcotte at Slate thinks it&#8217;s &#8220;brilliant&#8221;:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As the <em>Washington Post<\/em>\u2019s Erik Wemple <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/erik-wemple\/wp\/2013\/07\/17\/to-rolling-stone-detractors-please\/\" target=\"_blank\">points out<\/a>, the image <em>is<\/em> exploitative\u2014but it isn\u2019t just exploitative: It\u2019s also smart, unnerving journalism. By depicting a terrorist as sweet and handsome rather than ugly and terrifying, <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> has subverted our expectations and hinted at a larger truth. The cover presents a stark contrast with our usual image of terrorists. It asks, \u201cWhat did we expect to see in Tsarnaev? What did we hope to see?\u201d The answer, most likely, is a monster, a brutish dolt with outward manifestations of evil.
