In 1892, Luke M. Griswold died.\u00a0 <\/span>He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Springfield, MA.<\/p>\n Griswold had been a sailor.\u00a0 <\/span>He had been in the US Navy, and had served in the Civil War.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n Griswold was far from common, however.\u00a0 <\/span>He was a Medal of Honor recipient.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n Sadly, he was also a forgotten Medal of Honor recipient.\u00a0 His grave was a common and plain one.\u00a0 Indeed, there was not even a headstone marking his life and passing.\u00a0 Instead, only a stone with the engraved number \u201c297\u201d<\/a> marked his resting place.<\/p>\n For over 120 years, that was the situation.\u00a0 And that\u2019s how things would have probably stayed.\u00a0 <\/span>Except . . . one man found that unacceptable.<\/p>\n Some years ago, J. Donald Morfe of Baltimore, MD \u2013 an Army veteran \u2013 learned that the final resting places for many Medal of Honor recipients were not marked with proper headstones.\u00a0 <\/span>He found this troubling.<\/p>\n Since learning of that sad situation Morfe, working together with other volunteers, has convinced various government or private organizations to fund proper headstones for many these heretofore unmarked heroes.\u00a0 They’ve arranged markers for 220 so far.\u00a0 Griswold’s was the latest.<\/p>\n Some might ask, “Why this is important?”\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n The answer is simple:\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cPoor is the Nation that has no Heroes, but beggared<\/em> is the Nation that has, and forgets them.\u201d Kudos, Mr. Morfe.\u00a0 Many thanks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
