{"id":35807,"date":"2013-05-26T07:35:25","date_gmt":"2013-05-26T11:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=35807"},"modified":"2013-05-25T22:39:08","modified_gmt":"2013-05-26T02:39:08","slug":"navy-gets-two-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=35807","title":{"rendered":"Navy Gets Two Right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Navy has caught flack recently regarding naming its ships. \u00a0But recently the Navy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/article\/20130523\/NEWS\/305230035\/Destroyers-named-MoH-recipient-former-SECNAV\">announced names for two new ships<\/a> that are IMO apropos.\u00a0 One will be named after a former SECNAV; the other, after a MoH recipient.<\/p>\n<p>DDG-117 will be named for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Robert_Ignatius\">Mr. Paul Ignatius<\/a>.\u00a0 Mr. Ignatius was a Navy Lieutenant during World War II.\u00a0 He served as Assistant Secretary of Defense (Installations and Logistics) and as Secretary of the Navy during the LBJ administration.<\/p>\n<p>The next destroyer to be built will be named after the late Senator Daniel Inouye.\u00a0 As a member of the US Army\u2019s 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), then SGT Inouye received a battlefield commission for his actions during the 442nd RCTs breakthrough to rescue World War II&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lost_Battalion_%28World_War_II%29\">\u201cLost Battalion\u201d<\/a> (1st Batalion, 141st Infantry, 36th Infantry Division) in the Vosage Mountains of France in late October 1944.\u00a0 He was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniel_Inouye\">gallantry in action at San Terenzo, Italy<\/a>, on 21 April 1945.\u00a0 Senator Inouye\u2019s DSC, along with decorations of 19 other members of the 442nd RCT, were later upgraded to the Medal of Honor.\u00a0 At the time of his death in December 2012, Senator Inouye was the second-longest serving Senator in US history.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t argue with naming a ship after a Navy Veteran who later became SECNAV.\u00a0 And even if he wasn\u2019t Navy, IMO any former MoH recipient is a fitting choice as a namesake for a US Navy ship.<\/p>\n<p>Kudos to the SECNAV for getting these two right.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Navy has caught flack recently regarding naming its ships. \u00a0But recently the Navy announced names &hellip; <a title=\"Navy Gets Two Right\" class=\"hm-read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=35807\"><span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Navy Gets Two Right<\/span>Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":623,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[119],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-35807","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-navy"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/35807","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/623"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=35807"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/35807\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=35807"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=35807"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=35807"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
