{"id":35602,"date":"2013-05-14T11:31:04","date_gmt":"2013-05-14T15:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/valorguardians.com\/blog\/?p=35602"},"modified":"2013-05-14T11:31:04","modified_gmt":"2013-05-14T15:31:04","slug":"somalis-sentenced-in-minneapolis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.azuse.cloud\/?p=35602","title":{"rendered":"Somalis sentenced in Minneapolis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A judge sentenced two Somalis, Muhamud Said Omar, 46, a janitor at a Minneapolis mosque and Kamal Said Hassan, 28 to 20 &#038; 10-year stints, respectively, in prison for their participation in a &#8220;pipeline&#8221; for sending other young Somalis to their home country to battle with Ethiopian troops who invaded Somalia in 2006 to try and get some semblance of order there. From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/us\/2-somali-americans-sentenced-for-aiding-foreign-terrorism-1.220851\">Stars &#038; Stripes<\/a>;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> All the men charged in Minneapolis have been accused of supporting Al-Shabab, an insurgent group that fought the Ethiopians and in 2008 was declared a terrorist organization by the State Department.<\/p>\n<p>Omar was convicted of arranging the travel of young Minneapolis men to Somalia and supplying guns to Al-Shabab. Three men who went to Somalia to fight testified that Omar arranged their travel. They said Omar flew to Somalia, visited an Al-Shabab safe house in early 2008 and provided cash for rifles. Prosecutors said Omar helped arrange travel for six more recruits in 2008 even after Shirwa Ahmed, of Minneapolis, blew himself up in a suicide attack in Somalia.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2008 Omar sought asylum in the Netherlands, but was extradited. During closing arguments in his trial, he said, &#8220;No evidence proves that I committed any crime.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The other seven awaiting sentencing will be in front of U.S. District Judge Michael Davis, the same judge who sentenced the first two, to receive the news of their fates next week.
