A follow-up to yesterday’s article.\u00a0 It seems the SECDEF now has gotten wind of that recent not-so-stellar inspection<\/a> within the USAF missile community.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not pleased.\u00a0 And he\u2019s now reportedly asking for details<\/a>.<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t bode well for anyone involved.\u00a0 IMO that\u2019s particularly true for those launch officers who got “benched” and for the unit\u2019s chain-of-command.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m thinking the wing CO – as well as the affected squadron and flight COs, if a significant number of the \u201cbenched\u201d launch officers were clustered in the same squadron or flight – might want to start working on their resumes.\u00a0 And I’d guess the officers who got \u201cbenched\u201d might want to start thinking about alternate long-term career plans, too.<\/p>\n

When the SECDEF personally<\/span> starts asking for details about problems in your<\/i> unit, if you\u2019re the CO that is not<\/em> a good thing.\u00a0\u00a0 Ditto if you\u2019ve done something personally to cause or contribute to the incident.<\/p>\n

Frankly, I just don\u2019t see senior USAF leadership as having the stones to tell the SECDEF, \u201cSir, we got this; back off and let us fix the problem.\u201d\u00a0 That’s especially true after the nuke-related incidents in 2008 that led to several very senior USAF officials getting fired.<\/p>\n

That would mean that \u201cBig Air Force\u201d is willing to own up to being partly responsible for the situation – years after they should have fixed things.\u00a0 I just don\u2019t see that happening.\u00a0 Instead, I\u2019m guessing they\u2019ll look for someone to take the fall \u2013 whether it’s deserved or not.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
