I thought the whole point of that \u201cArab Spring\u201d stuff was to get rid of restrictive, autocratic governments and to promote freedom.\u00a0 And I thought that\u2019s why the current administration supported the \u201cArab Spring\u201d movements in Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt while they deposed stable governments in each nation.<\/p>\n

But I must have been wrong, at least when it comes to Egypt.<\/p>\n

It seems as if Egypt has now started arresting activists \u2013 as well as comedians accused of insulting President Morsi<\/a>.\u00a0 Hmm.\u00a0 Those same kinds of things are what Mubarak did, if I recall correctly \u2013 and was one of the reasons why the \u201cArab Spring\u201d folks wanted him gone.<\/p>\n

Egypt is also debating new laws that will give the state sweeping powers to regulate civil society.\u00a0 Hmmm.\u00a0 I seem to recall Mubarak being castigated for doing that also.\u00a0 But maybe I\u2019m wrong about that, too.<\/p>\n

And I don\u2019t recall Murbarak ever declaring NGO funds provided from sources abroad to be \u201cpublic funds\u201d \u2013 like one new law supported by Morsi and his ilk in Egypt\u2019s parliament would do.<\/p>\n

But fear not:\u00a0 that decision to support the Arab Spring protestors and throw valued US allies out on their ear was a good one.\u00a0 Otherwise, the POTUS and his staff wouldn\u2019t have made it, right?<\/p>\n

Yeah, right.\u00a0 I\u2019m really getting the impression of \u201cd\u00e9j\u00e0 vu all over again\u201d \u2013 33+ years later.\u00a0 Think Teheran, 1978.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re still paying the price for that Carter-era idiocy.\u00a0 I wonder how long we\u2019ll be paying for this latest na\u00efve foolishness?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
