The New York Times<\/a> reports that Iowa Senator Tom Harkin won’t be running for another term in the Senate;<\/p>\n

\u201cTo walk away from this position and this power is not an easy thing,\u201d Mr. Harkin told The Des Moines Register on Saturday. \u201cBut I think it\u2019s the right thing. And I have two years left. I\u2019m not passing the torch sitting down, it\u2019s a running relay. I intend to be very active over the next two years.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There are names that, when mentioned in polite company, remind me of why I got into the phony-busting business and Tom Harkin is one of them. It seems that for years he told tales of his daring-do in the skies over Vietnam fighting the clouds of MiGs that descended on him. B.G. Burkett’s book, Stolen Valor<\/a> broke the news that he was a ferry pilot who flew damaged aircraft out of the theater to the depot for repairs. When his records emerged that proved he’d never served in Vietnam, he began referring to himself as a “Vietnam era” veteran. <\/p>\n

He should have been voted out of office decades ago, but, hey, if Iowa wants to be represented in the Senate by a liar and a phony, I guess it’s their business. I just thought that it was my job to remind everyone on the day he announced his impending retirement of the kind of man he is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
